Cyclone Harold Appeal

The Tanbok Project is a UK registered charity working with communities in Vanuatu. We are currently fundraising to support the recovery effort on Pentecost Island in the wake of the absolutely devastating Cyclone Harold, which destroyed up to 95% of buildings and crops on 6th April 2020. This video gives an indication of impact of Harold on individuals and communities.

Cyclone Harold was the second strongest cyclone in history to make landfall in Vanuatu, and the strongest ever to occur so late in the cyclone season. Climate change is believed to be culpable in increasing the frequency and severity of such deadly cyclones. For more information on what makes this such an unprecedented disaster, please see https://medium.com/@rachelbrooks_4428…

The rebuild process will be never-ending. We are trying to do our bit, and any contribution you can make will go a long way. We have virtually no running costs or overheads, so every penny goes to directly to the communities we work with. The emergency funds we raise will enable repairs to critical community infrastructure, like health facilities, in the worst affected regions.

In the longer term, our particular focus is on increasing community resilience to natural disasters. We will be helping people and communities to Build Back Better. In particular, we will be:

  • Working with architects and communities to develop affordable, natural disaster-proof housing prototypes, to enable normal people to rebuild their homes to cyclone-proof standards;
  • Building prototype homes at key locations, like hospitals and schools, and train the local communities in cyclone resistant construction techniques;
  • Working with architects and communities to rebuild schools devastated by Cyclone Harold.
